Botox procedures: rejuvenation or risky game?

Not only in Bulgaria, Botox procedures performed by pseudo-experts are causing problems

Not only in Bulgaria, Botox procedures performed by pseudo-experts are causing problems. After an intervention in the back room of a hair salon, a woman in Hamburg was left with a paralyzed eyelid for months, reports NDR. The 23-year-old beautician who organized the "Botox party" at which the procedure was performed is facing court.

But why do so many people decide to have Botox procedures, including with unlicensed "experts"? For many, the desire to look younger is the main reason. However, Botox has other effects - therapy with it helps with migraines and excessive sweating, explains the German publication "Focus".

How does Botox affect the skin?

Botox (or botulinum toxin) is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into the skin, it blocks the nerve impulses that normally tense the muscles. The result is a temporary relaxation of the muscles, which smoothes the surrounding skin and reduces wrinkles.

Botox is mainly used for mimic wrinkles, i.e. those that appear on the face due to repetitive muscle movements. These include wrinkles between the eyebrows, on the forehead and around the eyes. Static wrinkles, which are formed as a result of the natural aging process and gravity, must be treated differently - most often with hyaluronic acid, explains "Focus".

How is Botox therapy performed and how long does it last?

The Botox procedure is relatively quick and not complicated, the German publication states. The entire process in most cases lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. First, the point to be treated is disinfected and marked. Then the doctor uses a very fine needle to inject small amounts of Botox into the desired location.

The full effect of Botox usually occurs after three to five days and lasts from three to six months, depending on the individual metabolism and the treated area. Regular procedures are necessary to achieve lasting results. Most patients repeat the procedures within four to six months.

How long does Botox last and what are the effects?

The effect of Botox is temporary, so periodic refreshment is necessary. This has the advantage - if the initial result is not to your liking, you just have to wait until the effect disappears and the old situation is restored.

There are also measures that can prolong the effect of Botox, the German publication points out. These include avoiding exposure to bright sunlight and the absence of stress, good skin care, as well as avoiding certain medications that can affect the effect of Botox. In addition, it has been found that taking preparations with zinc can prolong the effect of Botox.

"Focus" also informs about the prices of Botox procedures, pointing out that they vary depending on the amount of substance used, as well as the size and number of treated areas. On average, one procedure costs between 200 and 600 euros.

What are the risks and side effects?

Although Botox, when administered correctly, is considered safe, as with any medical procedure, side effects are possible. In this case, they are most often pain, swelling or bleeding at the injection site. In addition, headaches, flu-like symptoms or drooping eyelids may occur.

In rare cases, botulinum toxin can be transferred to other parts of the body and cause unwanted symptoms there such as muscle weakness, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and in very rare cases - difficulty breathing. If such symptoms appear, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Overdose can lead to serious consequences, such as breathing problems and muscle weakness. Therefore, it is extremely important that all therapies are carried out by licensed and experienced doctors. Although rare, allergic reactions are also possible.

How to find a suitable specialist?

The German publication emphasizes that before Botox therapy, a detailed consultation with a specialist doctor must be carried out. The desired effect, possible risks and side effects should be discussed there, and an individual treatment plan should be prepared.

The doctor must have detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the face and the effect of Botox in order to achieve a natural and aesthetically pleasing result. A successful result is manifested in the natural reduction of wrinkles without affecting facial expressions.
