Mercedes abandons development of new platform for luxury electric cars - 1

Mercedes-Benz has reportedly taken the decision to halt development of a new platform intended for the next-generation EQS and EQE models due to poor sales of their current versions. According to a Handelsblatt report, the move will save the company billions in development and retooling costs. Instead of introducing the MB.EA platform planned for 2028, Mercedes-Benz will now focus on refining the existing EVA2 platform for its flagship electric cars.

Despite the platform change, the upcoming EQS and EQE models are expected to receive significant upgrades. These include moving from a 400-volt to an 800-volt charging system for faster charging times, advances in battery technology for greater energy storage, and the deployment of more efficient electric motors.

Although the cancellation of the MB.EA platform represents a change in strategy, Mercedes-Benz remains committed to electric mobility. The company continues to develop platforms such as the MMA for compact models serving both electric and internal combustion engines, as well as specialized platforms for sports cars and commercial vehicles.
