Honda has confirmed that the new Prelude will arrive in Europe in early 2026 and that it will feature a hybrid powertrain with Honda S+ Shift technology. The Prelude is expected to be built on the same architecture as the Civic, CR-V and ZR-V.
However, it is likely that Honda engineers will give the model a sharper chassis tuning to justify its sporty spirit. Under the hood of the new product will be Honda's familiar two-motor hybrid system.
It is familiar from the Civic, Accord, HR-V and CR-V hybrids. This powertrain combines a two-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, one of which drives the front wheels in most scenarios.
Honda uses the term eCVT to refer to transmissions, but this system does not actually have a traditional gearbox. Basically, it's a large clutch that engages or disengages the engine as needed.
That's why the Japanese automaker's engineers have developed technology that replicates the moment of gear shifting, similar to traditional cars.
The company says that Honda's S+ Shift system will mimic the sound and feel of rapid automatic gear changes to provide the perfect balance of thrilling driving pleasure in the new Prelude.
Recall that the original model was introduced 46 years ago. Since then, the Prelude has gone through 5 generations, but its production was discontinued in 2000. Now Honda has decided to revive the car in a new generation.
Hans de Jager, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, said: “The Honda Prelude is an iconic car and this latest model promises to build on that legacy with our signature hybrid performance and the latest dynamic technology.
All to ensure not only exceptional performance, but also the driving pleasure for which this model is known. We are happy to welcome it to Europe after the very positive reception in Japan."
