What happens with used diesel cars - 1

In the used car market, which is growing slightly according to data from NGC-Data, the share of diesel models continues to decline, but this decline has slowed down considerably over the past year. German diesels remain at the top of sales, but the French dCi and HDi are almost in line with them.

Overall, the European used car market experienced an increase in 2024 (+ 2.93%), while the share of transactions with diesel cars decreased by 3.83%. A logical evolution that follows that of the new car market, where diesel is also losing momentum, but not due to a lack of demand, but due to a lack of supply.

However, with 2,575,077 diesel cars sold in 2024 in France, this fuel still represents 47.7% of used car sales. In Germany, this percentage is even higher - 53%, and these are the two largest car markets on the Old Continent.

Analysts attribute this unabated interest in used diesel cars to the lack of interest in new electric vehicles, as well as the lack of sufficient supply of new diesel cars. The supply of new diesels has been reduced or even completely disappeared for some brands, which mathematically limits the supply of second-hand cars.

From there, the prices of diesel used cars have increased, with the most striking examples being the Citroën Berlingo, C4 Picasso, VW Tiguan and BMW 5er, Audi A3 and Mercedes C-class.
