Police in the city of Mersin in Turkey have seized 5,000 counterfeit 2-euro coins that were supposed to be used to pay tourists. According to the newspaper Türkiye, five suspects have been detained.
The Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Units of the Mersin Security Directorate have been investigating the alleged counterfeit money. Surveillance has been carried out at one of the addresses in the city where the criminals were operating.
Police searched the address yesterday and detained five suspects. Five black bags of counterfeit euros wrapped in tape were seized from them. Three of those arrested were already wanted for various crimes, including robbery and fraud.
During interrogations, it was revealed that the counterfeit coins were planned to be used in tourist areas at the beginning of the season to pay tourists. The counterfeit money itself was delivered to Mersin from Istanbul.
