Kazakhstan cannot unilaterally change tariffs on imports of goods from the US, since the republic is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Such decisions can only be made by all “five“ countries of the EAEU, but they are not yet being considered, said Deputy Minister of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan Zhanel Kushukova.
“Changing import tariffs from Kazakhstan is impossible due to the fact that we are members of the Eurasian Economic Union. We have obligations and a single customs tariff is applied for five countries. That is, if any tariffs on imported goods are changed, they will be changed by decision of the “five“. “Today such issues are not being considered“, she told reporters after a session of the Senate (upper house) of the Kazakh parliament.
Kushukova recalled that, according to the Ministry of Trade of Kazakhstan, about 5% of exports from Kazakhstan fall under US tariffs. “These 5% - the tariffs on them are already at the level of 10% in connection with the decree of the US president. Of course, these $92 million (the volume of trade subject to US tariffs - TASS note) are sensitive for us, but most of the trade is open”, the deputy head of the ministry said.
