Liberal organization expels Peevski's MRF - 1

The Liberal Network of Southeast Europe (LIBSEEN) has expelled Delyan Peevski's MRF from its membership and called on the European family of the ALDE movement to follow suit. In a statement to Bulgarian media, the liberals said the party had been "questionably renamed" to "DPS - New Beginning" and confirm their support for Dzhevdet Chakarov, reports 24 Chasa.

The decision was made on December 14, but was announced today, while an extraordinary national conference of the MRF, convened by Chairman Peevski, is underway, at which Ahmed Dogan is expected to be expelled and Peevski to become the sole leader.

Here is the entire announcement:
LIBSEEN is terminating its cooperation with the Bulgarian party amid serious concerns about the rule of law. In light of recent events in Bulgaria, especially the continued silence of the judiciary and the prosecution regarding serious allegations of corruption and existing international sanctions, as well as reports of electoral fraud and pressure on critical voices, the leadership of the Liberal Network of Southeast Europe (LIBSEEN) has initiated an immediate procedure to expel the political party "DPS", dubiously renamed today to "DPS-New Beginning", from its membership.

LIBSEEN would like to call on the ALDE party to follow our example. This decision is in accordance with Article VII of the LIBSEEN Statute, which allows for the suspension or expulsion of member organizations that do not act in accordance with the principles of the network, including the fight against corruption and respect for the rule of law. LIBSEEN firmly believes that affiliation with individuals or organizations led by sanctioned figures is unacceptable and undermines trust in the liberal family. This position is in line with the principles of accountability and transparency that guide the network’s actions. Recognizing the importance of cooperation with truly liberal forces in Bulgaria, LIBSEEN will continue to work with those who uphold these principles, including those led by the Vice President of the Liberal International, Dr. Dzhevdet Chakarov, and representatives of the Bulgarian membership of the European Liberal Forum.

This decision is the result of discussions at the last meeting of the Governing Board, which took place on December 14, 2024, and underlines LIBSEEN’s commitment to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct. LIBSEEN and its members reaffirm their unwavering commitment to promoting democracy, the rule of law and the fight against corruption throughout South-Eastern Europe. With these decisive actions, it aims to preserve the integrity of the liberal family and ensure that it remains a beacon of hope for a more just and equitable European future for the region.
