IPB: There is nothing better than bad weather for road safety - 1

A detailed analysis of the data for 2024 shows that 10 people died during snowfall, heavy rain and fog, or 2% of all deaths during the year. While when the weather was dry, sunny and favorable for traffic, 352 people died, or 73% of all deaths, reported the Institute for Road Safety.

The conclusion we can draw is that mobility in Bulgaria is severely limited. Fewer victims in bad weather are due to the lower speeds that drivers choose in bad weather conditions. While in good weather, the organization of traffic/speed regimes determined by the road owners are not in line with the condition of the roads. Poor maintenance, very often the lack of it, as well as the favorable corruption environment in the RIA are the main challenge for the Bulgarian government in 2025. The Ministry of Interior reports record levels of control, and in 2024 they found over 3 million violations under the Road Traffic Act, with over 1 million of them being for speeding. The 8% decrease in road traffic fatalities compared to 2023 is mainly due to random events, such as weather conditions, isolated accidents with one fatality, serious traffic congestion/traffic jams in the capital, etc.

Experts from the Road Safety Institute insist that all strategies and action plans of the responsible institutions be reviewed, by starting to take into account the real impact of poor/dangerous infrastructure, as well as that the Ministry of Interior's control should also cover road infrastructure.
