GERB/EPP MEP Andrey Novakov is the only Bulgarian who was accepted as a full member of the newly established Security and Defence Committee (SEDE) of the European Parliament.
This happened today in Brussels during the meeting of the committee, which is being established for the first time since the establishment of the European Parliament (EP). The committee includes 43 full members out of a total of 720 MEPs in the Parliament.
„First of all, this is recognition for the Bulgarian GERB/EPP delegation in the European Parliament. It is also recognition for the GERB and Boyko Borissov governments, which years ago made our country a reliable partner in the Union. "It also underlines the key role of our country in protecting the EU's external borders," said Andrey Novakov.
The EP has already approved the powers of the new Defence Committee during its last plenary session for 2024. According to the adopted texts, it will be responsible for the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), and will be fully competent for legislation in the field. It will also be responsible for the development of defence capabilities and training, EU missions in third countries, military mobility and infrastructure, as well as cooperation with NATO. The Committee will also carry out supervisory functions.
In addition to being an MEP, Andrey Novakov is also part of the reserve of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Bulgaria, and in 2023 he voluntarily completed initial military training in unit 52520 in the city of Shumen, specialized in air defense and artillery.
