Stanishev: Bulgaria is economically more prepared than Croatia and other countries that entered the eurozone - 1

Former Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev presented in the studio of “Your Day” on NOVA NEWS his position on the eurozone, as well as his motives for entering the race for the leadership position in the BSP and the need for clear goals for the formation in the current government.
“For me, it is politically important that Bulgaria enters the core of the EU, because there is always a danger of being pushed to the periphery. This will also be bad for the people. Bulgaria is economically more prepared than Croatia and other countries that entered the eurozone. We do not have financial sovereignty. We have been in a currency board since 1997. "...which means that we lack our own monetary policy," Stanishev said.

According to him, political problems are being exacerbated more than they actually are.
Regarding the participation of the BSP in the cabinet "Zhelyazkov", he explained that there is no set scenario in politics. “The leader of GERB Boyko Borisov is our coalition partner at the moment. The BSP may also come out of the government with some stabilization. The attitude towards the cabinet must be built on the basis of clear conditions. Specific policies must be discussed with everyone”, said the former Prime Minister.

”We live on islands like different tribes that hate each other - gerberas, besepari… If as a nation and society we do not have common goals, we are simply lost. And the BSP must become a party that formulates national consensuses based on policies”, said the former leader of the Socialists, who is now running for a new term at the head of the left.
“I have a debt to the BSP because I am worried about the danger of a 130-year-old tradition withering away. We see how far we have come. By entering the government, we are taking a very heavy risk. The BSP needs more conversation than a specific chairman. No one is Baron Munchausen to pull us out of the swamp by the hair”, he said.

According to Stanishev The BSP Congress must answer three questions, the first of which is why the party came to power. ”The statement “to have a government” is not convincing. We must have clear goals - what we want to do for the country by entering the government with parties that are foreign to us in ideology. The second question is what the BSP is today - at least in half the country the party is in ruins. The third question is what the left will show up with in the next elections,” he said. And he stressed that he does not see the priorities of the left in the agreement for joint governance, which, in his words, is a problem. “I want to see a structure that will deal with the demographic problem, because without a population there is no future”, Stanishev said. According to him, our country does not have a regional policy to reverse the trend of depopulation of half of Bulgaria.
Asked if there was a decision of the Congress for the BSP not to enter a coalition with the MRF and GERB, he said that there was a report by Cornelia Ninova, which mentioned a similar point. “I am not a fetishist on the subject of one document. They took this step, but they did it in a bad way”, he said.

Regarding the direct election of the BSP chairman, he said that this places the party chairman above the Congress and the National Council. “With all its weaknesses, direct elections give members the opportunity to speak directly. I am worried that the Congress could turn into a deal with various lobbies and a hearing of the 15 candidates, without it being clear why we should believe them. If this dominates, the political meaning and the chance for the BSP to reach the next elections with the ambition to regain the trust of the voters will be lost”, Stanishev said.
