"Currently, the student movement, which of course also has the support of academics, does not have its own political and clear leading group".
This is what the former Bulgarian ambassador to Belgrade, Prof. Angel Dimitrov, told NOVA about the protests in Serbia.
When asked if a parallel could be drawn between the current demonstrations and those that ousted Slobodan Milosevic from power, he said the following:
"For the first time in 25 years there is such a high level of political tension in our neighbor. But the comparison can only be from the perspective of the scale of the demonstration. In essence, they are very different. Back then, they had a much clearer goal and image. Now the dissatisfaction, the core of which is young people, is somehow not quite accurately formulated. Limiting itself only to the truth about this unfortunate repair that led to the incident is not enough. However, what is happening now, for me, continues to create quite unclear moments and does not allow us to be absolutely categorical in expecting any clear result.
"Formally, there is no change in Vučić's behavior. However, there is one in his geopolitical orientation. He is not the typical Russophile, as the people around him are. Recently, he has gradually deepened ties with Russia," Dimitrov added.
And he added: "Vučić is a quite experienced politician. He is a very good propagandist, he is skilled, but this time his room for maneuver is quite narrow".
According to him, it is still unclear how the protests will end.
"And this is the big problem. Is it because of fatigue, because Vucic and people from his circle are giving many signals that they have no intention of handing over power. Suffice it to recall that yesterday he had a meeting with the military leadership of the state. This is a reminder that no change in the power structures will be allowed".
According to him, Vucic will look for a prime minister who will be entirely dependent on his political will.
Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigned a few days ago. As a motive, he cited the attack on students on the night of Monday to Tuesday in Novi Sad by unknown individuals.
