Zafirov: It is unacceptable to legitimize fascist ideology - 1

Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov joined the march "People, be vigilant! Stop fascism" against the holding of the Lukovmarch, FOCUS reported.

Fascist ideology and its supporters cannot and should not be rehabilitated. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov, who today participated in the peaceful march "People, be vigilant! Stop Fascism“, organized by the Bulgarian Anti-Fascist Union and the BSP - Sofia City Council.

In front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier gathered the Chairman of the BSP-Sofia and the leader of the Socialists in the Sofia Municipal Council Ivan Takov, the MPs from the left Atanas Atanasov and Gabriel Valkov, the municipal councilors Nikolay Velchev and Stanislav Mladenov, the Chairman of the Youth Union of the BSP - Sofia Martin Velev, the Chairman of the Bulgarian Anti-Fascist Union Evgeniy Beliy, the Chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists Snezhana Todorova, Prof. Dr. Iskra Baeva, as well as members of the BSP - Sofia City Council, the BSP press center reported.

“The streets and boulevards of the capital should not become a scene for demonstrations that propagate hatred“, said Ivan Takov. "I will not stop insisting that Mayor Vasil Terziev impose a ban on this fascist event. General Hristo Lukov, whose personality is at the heart of this procession, is the leader of the pro-Nazi Union of Bulgarian National Legions - an organization that openly supports the implementation of the Law for the Protection of the Nation, which came into force in early 1941. The fact is that the anti-Semitic policy of Lukov and his supporters casts a shadow over one of the most dignified moments in Bulgarian history. It was the ruling regime at his time that approved and supported the deportation of 11,343 Jews from White Sea Thrace, Vardar Macedonia and Pirot to the Treblinka death camp, where they all met their end."

Zafirov commented that the memory of the millions of victims of World War II requires that fascism, racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination be condemned and rejected unconditionally.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that the salvation of Bulgarian Jews is one of the brightest pages in our history and we have reason to be proud of it, but we cannot allow fascist ideas to be presented in a new light and march through the streets of Sofia 80 years later.
