Landmines and unexploded ordnance have killed or injured at least 188 children in Syria in the past three months, creating a growing threat at a time when more families are returning to their homes. This was reported by the non-governmental organization "Save the Children", quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.

More than 60 of these children have died since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8, which ended more than 13 years of civil war, the statement said.

„An average of two children a day are being killed or injured – "a total of at least 188 children in three months," said Buyar Hoxha, Save the Children's Syria director.

The organization warns that the death toll is likely to rise as children help their families with agricultural work, forage for food or simply play outside.

In the past three months, munitions explosions have killed or injured a total of at least 628 people of all ages - more than two-thirds of the total recorded for all of 2023. However, the organization does not specify the number of dead versus injured.

„Save the Children“ is calling on authorities to accelerate efforts to clear mines and unexploded ordnance, which are widespread across much of Syria after the war. According to the organization, the conflict has killed more than half a million people and forced over 10 million Syrians to flee their homes.
