Ognyan Minchev: We are yet to see attempts to disunite Europe - 1

Given the extremely complex situation in the field of European security, it is necessary to make quick and adequate decisions. From now on, we will have to get used to such selective meetings between large countries. Smaller countries will remain on the periphery when such important issues are being decided. This was stated by political scientist Ognyan Minchev in the program “From the Day“ on BNT regarding the news that President Macron is gathering specific leaders from Europe because of Trump and Ukraine.

“We will have to get used to it. This meeting is the result of this thunder that fell at the Munich conference because of the American position that Europe should take care of its own defense“, he explained.

“I think that we are yet to see consistent actions from the Donald Trump administration to disunite Europe. Trump has always preferred to deal with more defenseless partners on whom he can put pressure from a position of strength. The approach is to work with European countries one by one, not with the unification of Europe“, the political scientist warned.

When asked what is next for Europe's collective security, Ognyan Minchev said: “First, it must form a core of leading countries that can shape the security of the EU. Europe will cease to be any community if it fails to become a geopolitical community and protect its security“.

The upcoming meeting of the negotiating teams of Russia and the United States in Riyadh, the political scientist commented as follows: “Trump does not seem to have a plan to achieve peace in Ukraine. These events are some form of restarting US-Russian relations, which have been interrupted in recent years. Now Trump is resuming political contacts. Negotiations on Ukraine in the absence of the country cannot be held. We should not perceive Ukraine or Europe as helpless. Ukraine has very strong positions in the conflict. The same applies to Russia“, explained Minchev.

“The situation today is quite different from that in 1945 in Yalta. Today, Europe is not a blank spot on the map, it is a union with nearly 500 million citizens. There is no room for final pessimism,“ he concluded.
