Naydenov: Peacekeeping units can be sent to Ukraine - 1

A foreign military contingent possibly sent to Ukraine must have a specific mission, a clear mandate, defined with precision. It can be of three types, according to its set goals - peacekeeping units, covert or deterrent forces. This was stated by former Defense Minister Angel Naydenov in the studio of "Denyat na Zievo" on NOVA NEWS.

"When talking about peacekeeping units, there should be an agreement to cease hostilities. Obviously, they are deployed along the front line to separate the warring parties, for the purpose of self-defense. It seems to me that the idea is more for the so-called. "covert forces" with a strength of about 30,000 people, located in large cities or critical infrastructure sites in Ukraine - further from the front line. They will repel a military attack in the event of aggression, but do not cause concerns about an attack due to their small number. Another option is the so-called "deterrent forces", which have the task of repelling and changing the balance of forces on the ground. They have heavy weapons," explained Naydenov.

We recall that the deputies adopted a declaration expressing the position of the 51st National Assembly on the non-participation of Bulgarian armed forces in military operations on the territory of Ukraine.

According to the former Minister of Defense, the document meets the expectations and dispels the fears of the groups that feared that Bulgarian soldiers would be sent to Ukraine. "However, it emphasizes that there is a possibility, if it is decided within the framework of the organizations in which the country participates, for Bulgaria to take part in an operation in Ukraine. However, NATO and the EU exclude the sending of a military contingent of peacekeeping units to the war-torn country. At the UN, a Security Council resolution is needed, but Moscow has stated that it does not accept the participation of foreign troops. So such a resolution will not be supported. In addition, it should not be forgotten that a peacekeeping mission and a peacekeeping mission are two different things by definition," Naydenov also stated.
