Tension and serious incidents marked the protest of the "Vazrazhdane" party in the capital, NOVA reported. Members and sympathizers of the political formation organized a demonstration in defense of the Bulgarian lev and against the introduction of the euro as the official currency in the country.
The protest march began in front of the headquarters of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). After the initial peaceful course, the demonstrators headed to the European Commission (EC) representation in Sofia. The situation escalated sharply when the protesters began to throw red paint at the facade of the building. Explosions of bombs were also heard at the scene.
In the ensuing clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers, police officers were injured. Some of the demonstrators were detained for disturbing public order, the Sofia Directorate of Internal Affairs (SDVR) confirmed.
Ten law enforcement officers were injured in aggressive actions during the protest of the "Vazrazhdane" party against the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, the Sofia Directorate of Internal Affairs (SDVR) announced, bTV reported.
The police units reacted immediately to the escalation of tension, detaining six participants in the riots. Fire trucks and emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and by 2:00 p.m. the gendarmerie was also involved.
During today's protest, participants chanted "Resignation" and "No to the Euro", expressing their disagreement with Bulgaria's planned accession to the Eurozone.
