A unique surgical system is now available at Alexandrovska Hospital in Sofia. For the first time in Bulgaria and the European Union, a robotic system with 4 arms goes into operation, which gives a chance for faster and more effective treatment of patients, bTV reported.
The equipment is in the Clinic of General and Hepato-Pancreatic Surgery. The machine also allows for telesurgery.
„Simply put - if the surgical team needs it, our colleagues from Shanghai, Beijing or Madrid can immediately join in with the same console and directly provide assistance. Something like the first and second pilots of an airplane“, explained Prof. Atanas Yonkov, executive director of Alexandrovska Hospital.
According to him, thanks to the new equipment, the patient receives minimal trauma with maximum safety. This is especially important in operations related to oncological diseases, in which minimal cleanliness of the surgical operation must be achieved.
Operations that are normally performed using the classical open method, with a large incision, major tissue trauma and significant blood loss, will now be performed through 4 minimal openings (of 8 mm) in the abdominal cavity and in the retroperitoneal space.
This reduces the risk of complications and leads to a number of advantages for the patient such as less trauma, minimal risk of blood loss, reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery for the patient, shortened hospital stay of 3-5 days, better cosmetic results.
