Bulgarian citizens should only travel to Greece tomorrow if necessary due to a nationwide strike, while also checking the current status of their flight schedules. This is recommended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on its website.

It is necessary to avoid entering the central parts of large cities and strictly follow the instructions of local authorities, the MFA added.

In connection with the upcoming nationwide strike in Greece on February 28 on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of the railway tragedy in Thembi, the MFA informed that rallies and processions are planned in the center of Athens and in other cities.

In Athens, the strike also includes a protest by the Union of Public Transport Employees, as well as air traffic controllers, who will not serve civil flights, with the exception of some special categories. On the day of the strike, the railway operator “Hellenic train“ will not operate courses in the country. The movement of buses, trolleybuses, taxis, as well as all ferries will be suspended. The metro, trams and suburban railway will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to serve the demonstrators, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.

The “Traffic Police“ Directorate in Thessaloniki is taking extraordinary measures to regulate traffic in the city. From 9 a.m. on February 28, no vehicles will be allowed to move in the central part of the city. Public transport routes have been changed. Traffic will be blocked on “Egnatia“, “Agiou Dimitriou“, “Ethniki Amina“, “Tsimiski“, “K. Karamanlis“, “Monastiriu“, “Dimokratia“ Square, “Χ.Α.Ν.Θ.“ Parking of vehicles on the streets in the center is prohibited. Additional restrictions are possible during the day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated.

If assistance is needed, Bulgarian citizens can contact the Embassy of Bulgaria in Athens, and more information can be found here.

The Greek National Air and Rail Accident Investigation and Transport Safety Authority presented its conclusions this morning on the causes that led to the train crash in the Tempe Pass on February 28, 2023, in which 57 people died, the Greek media reported. On the night of February 28, almost two years ago, two trains, a passenger train and a freight train, collided head-on near the city of Larissa. In addition to the dead, most of whom were students returning to their universities from a long weekend, the crash seriously injured 81 people and injured 99 others.
