Today at 10:00 in front of the Doctor's Monument in Sofia, on the occasion of the 147th anniversary of the Liberation of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Red Cross will bow to the memory of the medics who died during the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation in the battles of Pleven, Plovdiv, the village of Mechka and on Mount Shipka.
A requiem prayer and a prayer of thanks will be served at the ceremony, accompanied by the rendering of military honors by the National Guard unit and the presentation of wreaths and flowers.
The event will be attended by the Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mrs. Iliyana Yotova, the President of the Bulgarian Red Cross, Acad. Hristo Grigorov, representatives of institutions and civil organizations.
We invite everyone to honor the memory and highly humane work of doctors, nurses of mercy, Samaritan women and orderlies who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria.
The Doctor's Monument (Monument to the Medical Officers Who Died in the War of Liberation 1877 – 1878) in Sofia was built in 1882 – 1884 according to a design by the Czech architect Antonín Josef Tomašek. The relief crosses are the work of the Italian stonemason Luigi Farabos. On the monument to the medical officers who died during the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation 1877 – 1878, 531 names are inscribed, as well as the thousands of unknown heroes who pass on their legacy to us from the stone pages of the monument.
