The leader of “Vazrazhdane” Kostadin Kostadinov stated on his Facebook profile that he had sent an official letter to President Rumen Radev, asking him to “initiate a referendum to preserve the Bulgarian lev”.
“I have no illusions about the president's answer”, Kostadinov wrote.
According to him, citizen petition and parliamentary support for the referendum are not options that can reap success.
Here's what Kostadinov wrote:
The law gives us three options for calling a referendum:
1. With the signatures of at least 400,000 Bulgarian citizens.
2. With the signatures of at least 48 Bulgarian deputies.
3. With the signature of the Bulgarian President.
The first option was destroyed by the National Assembly and the Constitutional Court, which trampled on the constitution. The second option is unfeasible because the BSP and ITN, who previously supported us while we were in opposition with them, are now crutches for GERB and Peevski and refuse to support a referendum on the lev.
The third option remains. So far, I have spoken to the President twice on the subject, and he has twice refused to call a referendum. However, our conversations were unofficial and were not documented. Therefore, today I sent an official letter to Rumen Radev, asking him to initiate a referendum to preserve the Bulgarian lev.
I have no illusions about the President's response. But it is good that his official position remains documented for history.
