On the initiative of the “Vazrazhdane” delegation, a draft resolution has been submitted to the European Parliament, announced the head of the delegation to the European Parliament, chairman of the European party “Europe of Sovereign Nations” and a member of the group in the European Parliament.
It is about political repression and the violation of fundamental rights in Bulgaria and is signed by 28 MEPs from 9 countries, supported by the “Europe of Sovereign Nations” group in the European Parliament and is as follows:
Motion for a European Parliament resolution on political repression and fundamental rights in Bulgaria
The European Parliament,
● having regard to Rule 149 of its Rules of Procedure;
● whereas the Bulgarian Parliament rejected a petition signed by 604 000 Bulgarians (around 10% of the active population) to hold a referendum on postponing accession to the eurozone;
● whereas the Bulgarian President refused to schedule the referendum;
● whereas the National Assembly refused to adopt a resolution calling for a referendum on the matter;
● whereas the refusal to hold a referendum led to mass protests in Bulgaria, met with political repression, undermining democracy and public trust.
Calls for the adoption of the proposal to hold a national referendum on postponing Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone until at least 2043;
Condemns the prosecutor's request for the arrest and lifting of the immunity of members of parliament for their participation in public protests.
Notes with serious concern that four protesters remain permanently detained in custody, effectively turning them into political prisoners in the EU.
Expresses concern about the disproportionate checks by institutions acting under the influence of the ruling majority, targeting individuals and private businesses supporting the protests.
Calls on the Bulgarian authorities to refrain from any politically motivated prosecutions aimed at silencing dissent.
“After the submission of the draft resolution to the European Parliament, its discussion is also forthcoming. For twenty days now, Bulgarian citizens who have expressed a civil position have been held in pre-trial detention in Sofia. People with a clean past, active public figures. Among them are students and professionals from various public spheres. The delegation of “Vazrazhdane” to the European Parliament, of which I, Rada Laikova and Petar Volgin are a part, acquainted the group “Europe of Sovereign Nations” with what is happening in Bulgaria. We received the support of MEPs from the group and from such members of other groups in support of democracy.”, announced Stanislav Stoyanov.
As a sign of support for democracy and the protection of human rights, “Europe of Sovereign Nations” distributed a video address of the three MEPs from the delegation of “Vazrazhdane” in social networks, which gives publicity to what is happening in Bulgaria.
