Atanas Slavov: The CEC is still in its mandate. I do not think it should be terminated - 1

„More publicity should be introduced into the work of the Constitutional Court on landmark cases”, said the former Minister of Justice and MP from the „We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria” Atanas Slavov to NOVA NEWS.

„The CEC is still in its mandate. I do not think it should be terminated. There are many bodies with expired mandates that have not been replaced”, he pointed out. „Trust in the electoral process has been undermined. There should be more transparency in the entire process”, the MP emphasized.

“With the constitutional case and the court's reasoning, which we have already seen, it becomes clear how the court reaches the conclusions about nullifying the results of these sections. The Constitutional Court is also a court of facts in this procedure, not only a court of law. When there are numerous violations in the electoral process, this deviation with incorrect protocols and incorrect counting can occur. I do not think that this can become a mass practice”, Slavov said.

”The complaint that we had prepared contained specific sections, with specific violations”, he specified.

”If there were not so many mass violations, there would not be constitutional cases. The number of convictions for vote buying can be counted on the fingers of one hand," the former justice minister pointed out.

“It is not the job of the “Information Service” to refer the matter to the prosecution. It had enough time after the elections to do its job. It is not the job of the “Information Service” to communicate with the prosecution. It should be investigated, but not in a pending constitutional process. “Information Service” should have fulfilled its function without delay”, he said.

“My criticism of the Constitutional Court is not about the decision, but about the process. The Constitutional Court can be much more open and transparent throughout the process, because this case is of enormous public and political interest,” Slavov said.

“We are the opposition, but we will support the proposals in the budget related to the eurozone, the modernization of the army, and measures to support business. But we cannot expect that we will provide support for the government without requested support,” he stressed.

“It is important to support those policies that will bring us into the eurozone and modernize our army,” Slavov concluded.
