Atanas Shtilyanov, "Unruly Bulgaria": Asphalt, concrete, destruction - what is being dumped on our Black Sea dunes - 1

Asphalt, concrete, destruction - what is being dumped on our Black Sea dunes. Their destruction is an ecological and legal problem. The news came out that protected dunes in Shkorpilovtsi have been illegally converted into parking lots, violating the laws on the Black Sea coast and biodiversity. And these are important coastal ecosystems, they prevent erosion and flooding and are home to rare species.

This was commented on "Facebook" by Atanas Shtilyanov from "Unruly Bulgaria".

The protection of these valuable ecosystems requires efforts and international initiatives. Millions are poured into European programs specifically for dune protection, but in our country they either do not reach their intended purpose or are not used at all.

There is another way.

In the Netherlands, dunes absorb 70% of the sea level during storms, in France restored dunes reduce erosion by 30%, and in Romania, breakwaters are being built to protect against erosion and storms. And all this with European money.

The EU's goal is to restore 50% of degraded dunes by 2030, but in Bulgaria these efforts are not being implemented effectively. Instead of protecting the dunes through sustainable management, they are being destroyed through construction and parking lots, such as the glaring examples in Kavatsi and Nessebar.

These actions not only destroy nature, but also threaten tourism. Without responsibility from local authorities and the Regional Inspectorate for Environment, Water and Environment, the risks of erosion and flooding will increase, and biodiversity will be lost. This threatens not only nature, but also the sustainability of tourism.

Bulgaria will not have tourism without nature!

We must be rebellious in the face of the outrages and injustices on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.
