Stanislav Stoyanov: EU foreign policy must return to diplomacy, abandon military escalation - 1

Stanislav Stoyanov, an MEP elected from the “Vazrazhdane“ quota, member of the “Europe of Sovereign Nations“ group and chairman of the eponymous European party, called on EU leaders to return the Union's foreign policy back to diplomacy by abandoning the strategy of endless escalation of conflicts around the world.

“The EU must prioritize pragmatic cooperation, not polarization. The Union must defend diplomacy, not escalation and endless war. The EU was created as a peace project. It is time for its foreign policy to reflect this,“ Stoyanov said from the rostrum of the European Parliament during the debate on the annual report on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy for 2024.

Calls for EU intervention in regions such as the Pacific Ocean push the Union towards the role of global policeman and distance it from the peace project conceived by its founders, Stoyanov declared. “The obsession with Russia and China fuels unnecessary escalation, shifting focus and resources from vital issues such as economic stability and energy security. It demands unlimited military support for Ukraine - a country outside the EU and outside NATO - while ignoring the burden on European taxpayers,“ he said.

According to Stoyanov, the vision of European foreign policy presented in the report is deeply flawed — it is outdated, unbalanced and disconnected from the interests of EU citizens. “The report takes us back to the Cold War era, ignoring the complex geopolitical dynamics of the modern world,” Stoyanov added.

The annual reports on the “Implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy” assess the EU’s foreign policy strategy over the past year. As a guiding framework for EU foreign policy, the report is a key tool for shaping the Union’s role on the global stage.
