Kiril Petkov on road accident victims: Corruption kills! - 1

Corruption kills!

Analysis of data from 169 countries shows a shocking truth: 44% of road fatalities can be explained by the level of corruption in the given country.

The comparisons are eloquent:

• Somalia: corruption score - 13/100, road accident deaths - 20 per 100,000 population• Norway: corruption score - 85/100, deaths - only 1.5 per 100,000 population (13 times less)• Bulgaria: relatively low (bad) corruption score and 5 times more road accident victims than Norway.

The more corrupt a country is, the more road fatalities there are. This statistic is crushing - corruption turns out to be a more significant factor than weather conditions, driving skills, alcohol use and all other factors.

While we tolerate:• A Chief Prosecutor like Sarafov.• Grey Cardinals like Petyo Euroto in the justice system.• Public procurement coordinators like Ivan Mirinski in road construction.• Senior police officers who warn smugglers about inspections.• Politicians sanctioned for corruption under the Magnitsky Act...we cannot expect real change. As a society, we must stop tolerating corruption.

Statistics show that every 4 points improvement in the corruption index leads to a decrease in road fatalities by an average of one per 100,000 population. As long as we sell our votes, give bribes and turn a blind eye to irregularities, we cannot change the environment in which we live.
