The American company Tesla will put its Megapack battery plant in operation in Shanghai next week, Xinhua reported.
The plant will be the company's first to produce Megapack batteries outside the United States. Construction took 7 months. The plant was put into test mode in January.
According to previously published data from the administration of the Lingang District Pilot Free Trade Zone, where the plant is located, the volume of investment in this project will be about 1.45 billion yuan (nearly 204 million USD). The total area of the plant is 200,000 sq m.
It was previously reportedthat the design capacity of the plant will be at the level of 10,000 megapacks per year, which is equivalent to 40 GWh of energy. Megapack is a powerful energy storage device that helps stabilize the power grid and prevent power outages.
Shanghai already has a Tesla electric vehicle manufacturing plant. The agreement for its construction was signed in July 2018. The first phase of the plant, located in the Lingang District of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, was completed in just one year by the end of 2019. The total investment in this project will be about 50 billion yuan (about 7 billion USD).
