A Russian strategic bomber Tu-22M3 crashed today in the Irkutsk region, Siberia, Reuters reported, citing Russian media. According to preliminary information, the cause of the incident was a technical malfunction, TASS reported, quoted by BTA.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the crash occurred during a routine training flight. The crew, consisting of four people, managed to eject, but one of the pilots died upon landing.

„On April 2, 2025, during a scheduled flight, a Tu-22M3 plane crashed in the Irkutsk region. "The crew ejected successfully, but one of the pilots died," the Russian Defense Ministry said in an official statement.

The military department said the plane crashed in an uninhabited area and there were no civilian casualties or damage.

Russia uses Tu-22M3 strategic bombers for long-range strikes and nuclear deterrence, and they are a key part of its air force. The investigation into the causes of the crash is ongoing.
