Today, Britain is launching one of its largest programs for building new cities since World War II. The goal is to overcome the severe housing crisis on the island as quickly as possible.
The program includes the construction of nearly 1.5 million housing units by 2030. Over 100 sites have been identified for the construction of such "new cities", each of which has the potential to build at least 10,000 homes. What the new generation cities will look like will become clear today, after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer presents the government's plans. The new towns will be “well-designed, beautiful, with affordable housing, doctors' surgeries, schools and public transport“.
The new program will not only enable many Britons to fulfill their dream of owning their own home, but will also create “hundreds of thousands of jobs“ across the country.
The program was created on the basis of a similar one from the late 1940s to build new urban areas in order to reduce the housing shortage after World War II.
In recent years, the island's housing crisis has deepened as supply has failed to meet growing demand. This, in turn, led to a significant increase in prices and the acquisition of property became inaccessible to a large percentage of Britons, especially the younger generation.
