On December 1, everyone who bears the name Nahum celebrates a name day.
St. prophet Nahum lived 700 years before the birth of Christ. 200 years before him, the prophet Jonah, by God's command, predicted the destruction of the Nineveh Dictionary for the great iniquities of its inhabitants. Ninevites repented and the all-good Lord canceled His severe sentence.
But after a while they became depraved again. Then God, through the mouth of the prophet Nahum, revealed to them the terrible calamities that would befall them. The prophecy came true exactly. Nineveh, one of the largest and richest cities of the ancient world, was completely destroyed and plundered by the enemies. The spilling of the river Tiger completed the devastation.
Now one can hardly recognize the place where this huge city was. Prophet Nahum foretold other events and comforted God's faithful servants by revealing the gospel promises. "Here on the mountains are the footsteps of the evangelist who announces peace – cried the prophet. – Celebrate, Judeo, your feasts, fulfill your vows!" (Num. 1:15).
