On December 9, the Orthodox Church celebrates the conception of St. Anna, mother of the Virgin. Saint Anne is considered the patroness of marriage and family and motherhood. She is the protector of virgins, widows and pregnant women.
According to the biblical account, Anna and her husband Joachim were childless for nearly 20 years. They were visited by an angel who informed them that they would be gifted with an heir. Anna promised to dedicate her child to the service of God, and so at the age of 3, Maria was taken to the Second Temple.
According to belief, the birth pains of the Mother of God begin on this day, and therefore women do not work.
There are also beliefs that on this night black magic "catch" and therefore the women should not touch wool, so that the children and livestock do not get sick, and the men should not go out of the village, because the wild animals play in the meadows and if they see a man, they kidnap him. Today everyone with the names Ana, Aneta, Anelia, Anka, Anna, Anitsa, Anya, Yana, Yanka and Yanko has a name day.
Who has a name day today, December 9, 2024 Congratulations!
