On January 21, the Church celebrates the memory of St. Maximus the Confessor and St. Martyr Neophytus of Bithynia, Canidius, Valerian and Aquila - heavenly patrons of the ever-memorable Patriarch Maximus and his successor on the patriarchal throne - His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Neophytus. The common holiday for both was an occasion for Patriarch Maximus during his lifetime to share the joy of this day and his celebration with his younger brother - the current, infirm patriarch. The name Maxim has Latin roots and comes from the word “maximilianus”, which means “the greatest”.
