Under the Roman emperor Decius (249-251), there was a cruel persecution against Christians. In all regions of the empire, it was ordered to hand them over to torture and death.
At that time, in the city of Palermo, Sicily, there lived a young girl named Agatha (Dobra). She was a Christian and was famous for her beauty, virtue and noble lineage.
Her parents left her great wealth, but she valued earthly goods little, she loved God more than anything in the world, and therefore, when news of the persecution of Christians reached Sicily, she began to prepare for martyrdom.
Indeed, the governor of the country, Quintian, did not delay in sending soldiers for Agathia. The girl, upon hearing of their arrival, entered her room, prayed to God and then calmly and courageously went with the soldiers to the city of Catania.
She preserved her faith after the cruel tortures to which she was subjected.
They killed her in the city of Catania. Years after her death, a church was built on her grave.
The residents of the city consider her their patroness.
