Carlos Nassar was named the "Best Weightlifter in Europe" for 2024 in the rankings of the European Weightlifting Federation and the European branch of the International Association of Sports Journalists, BTA reports.

The past year was the most successful in the still short career of the 20-year-old male athlete, as he became the first Bulgarian to win a European, world and Olympic title within one calendar year. In addition, Nassar set world records in the clean and jerk, and was practically unrivaled in all sports forums in which he participated.

After Nassar, there were Azerbaijani Dadash Dadashbayli, German Roberto Gutu, Moldovan Marin Robu, Turkish Yusuf Genc, Armenian Varazdat Lalayan, Italian Oscar Reyes Martinez, Spanish Marcos Luis Velasco, Belarusian Yauheni Tsikhantsov, as well as the living legend of this sport, and recently the president of the Georgian Weightlifting Federation, Lasha Talakhadze. Talakhadze, who became the Olympic champion for the third time in a row in Paris, took the prize for "Best Weightlifter in Europe" in every year since the award was established in 2021.

In the women's category, the award for the past season went to the Norwegian Solfrid Coanda, who won the European and Olympic title in 2024.
16-year-old Ramazan Efe Yılmaz from Turkey and 19-year-old Alexandra Grigoryan from Armenia are "Rising Stars of European Weightlifting" for 2024.

Today, the European Weightlifting Championships for men and women open in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, where Bulgaria will be represented by 12 competitors. One of them is Nassar, who will lift in the new category of up to 96 kilograms.
