Details on the new Nintendo Switch 2 console - 1

Nintendo has finally taken the wraps off the Switch 2. This isn't a slight evolution, but a complete revolution designed to catapult the Switch into the next generation. We're talking a complete makeover - from the redesigned chassis to the innovative Joy-Con controllers.

Let's start with the hardware. The Switch 2 is bigger, bolder and more flexible. Measuring 271.8mm x 114.3mm, it has a wider stand, but retains a slim 13.9mm profile. The updated stand offers unparalleled flexibility, and the dual USB-C ports are a welcome addition. The Joy-Con 2 controllers are also new, black with colorful accents, ditching the traditional rail system for sturdy magnetic attachments. They can also now be used as a mouse, either individually or together, which opens up a whole new dimension of gameplay.

The display gets a major upgrade: a 7.9-inch 1080p screen with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and VRR. While it's still an LCD panel, the inclusion of HDR10 hints at a future OLED model. The new docking station ups the ante by supporting 4K at 60Hz and 1080p/1440p at 120Hz, with HDR10 support that actually shines on a decent TV. And to keep cool under load, the dock features active cooling.

Audio gets a sonic boost with improved built-in speakers and 3D audio support. In the dock, you'll get 5.1 PCM audio for your home theater setup. Storage gets a speed boost with a standard 256 GB and support for lightning-fast microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and Ethernet (via the dock) ensure you're always connected. Battery life remains a mystery, but the 5220mAh capacity suggests a decent improvement. As for the chipset? Nintendo is keeping this a secret, but it's confirmed to be powered by Nvidia.

On the software side, there's GameChat, which lets you chat with friends while playing using the Joy-Con 2's C button and built-in microphone. You can even share gameplay footage and use a special camera accessory. The catch? It's free until March 2026, after which it'll become an extra on Nintendo Switch Online. The Switch 2 plays both exclusive titles and most existing Switch games, with paid "Switch 2 Edition" upgrades available for improved visuals and gameplay.

And for retro enthusiasts? Nintendo Switch Online is getting a “Plus Expansion Pack” tier, which brings GameCube emulation to the Switch 2. A GameCube Wireless Controller and a Switch 2 Pro Controller, both with GameChat functionality, will also hit shelves. The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5. It will cost $450 for the standard edition or $500 for a bundle that includes a digital copy of Mario Kart World.
