April 7, 1963 Tito becomes President for Life of Yugoslavia - 1

On April 7, 1963, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was established with Marshal Josip Broz Tito as its President for Life.

The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) succeeded the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and existed until its dissolution in 1991–1992 during the Yugoslav Wars. Unofficially, it was also called Tito's Yugoslavia or Avnoj Yugoslavia. It was a socialist federal state consisting of six socialist republics: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Serbia additionally includes two autonomous republics: Vojvodina and Kosovo and Metohija.

The Yugoslav state was established in 1918 under the name Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. In January 1929, King Alexander I imposed a dictatorship in the country and renamed it the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Thus, for the first time, the term “Yugoslavia”, which had been used for decades, became official. After the occupation of the Kingdom during World War II, AVNOJ announced in 1943 its intention to revive the state under the name Democratic Federal Yugoslavia, leaving the question of a republic or a kingdom open.

On 29 November 1945, the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia was constituted as a communist country. The first president of post-war Yugoslavia was Ivo Lola Ribar, and the prime minister was Josip Broz Tito, recalls radio “Darik“. In 1953, Tito became president, and in 1963 he was proclaimed president for life. In the same year, the state received the final name Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
