The next package of EU sanctions should include steps against " the shadow fleet" of tankers carrying Russian oil, circumventing sanctions, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, the BBC reports.
"The adoption of the 14th package of sanctions is one of the most important things," he said, quoted by Reuters.
"We will make sure to include a ban on the import of liquefied natural gas, as well as measures to limit the Russian shadow fleet," added the Swedish foreign minister.
The discussion of the package of sanctions is at an early stage, it will not be adopted at the meeting in Luxembourg, notes Reuters.
Price restrictions apply to the import of Russian oil and oil products. Pipeline gas and LNG from Russia are not subject to sanctions.
According to the European Commission, the "shadow fleet" includes old ships belonging to unknown owners or structures that hide the beneficiaries, and that are involved in the trade of sanctioned oil using various fraudulent methods, Forbes writes.
Earlier, Bloomberg claimed that in 2023, Russian oil transported by sea was sold at a price above the established price ceiling of $60 per barrel. According to the publication, to circumvent the sanctions, tankers are used that formally sail under the flags of countries that have not joined the sanctions, but actually belong to Russian companies.
