The majority of the military personnel of the Bundeswehr (the Armed Forces of Germany) will be transferred under the command of NATO until 2025. This was stated by the German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius, quoted by TASS and News.bg.
The security of our allies is our security. Therefore, by next year, most of the Bundeswehr will be placed under NATO command and approximately 35,000 of them will be at the highest levels of readiness, he explained.
In his words, the main focus is to protect the allies on NATO's eastern flank. From the Far North to the Balkans, from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean, we devote significant resources to ensuring the security of allies and NATO as a whole," Pistorius stressed.
The defense minister noted that Germany is increasing the presence of the Bundeswehr on NATO's eastern flank. He specified that the deployment of German troops in Lithuania earlier this year was a clear signal to Vladimir Putin that NATO would defend allied territory if a Russian soldier set foot on it.
On May 6, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during a visit to Latvia, said that about 35,000 German military personnel are ready to quickly provide support to the Allies in the event of an emergency. He emphasized that the Bundeswehr will focus on the defense of North-Eastern and Central Europe.
