Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called on the countries of the Group of Seven (G-7) to come up with a common position regarding the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This was discussed at the beginning of the meeting of the G-7 foreign ministers in the Italian city of Fiumicino, as quoted by BTA.
"We need to be united on this issue," Tajani stressed, adding that he saw no immediate need for a reaction since Netanyahu is unlikely to visit Italy or any other country in the near future.
The ICC order also includes other Israeli and Palestinian figures, such as former Defense Minister Yoav Galant and the leader of "Hamas" Mohammed Deif, accused of war crimes related to the Gaza conflict.
Among the main topics of the forum are the war in Ukraine, as well as the potential geopolitical consequences of the possible re-election of Donald Trump. Tajani expressed support for holding a peace conference for Ukraine with the participation of the USA and Russia.
Italy will chair the G7 until the end of 2023, after which the rotating presidency will be taken over by Canada.
