European Commission to propose new legislation to increase the deportations of illegal migrants, the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced in a letter to the EU, reports "France Press", quoted by News.bg.

"The Commission will present a new proposal for legislation that will set out clear cooperation obligations for returnees and effectively streamline the return process," she wrote in response to requests from several EU member states.

"However, we will need a new legal framework to strengthen our capacity to act," added von der Leyen in the letter sent to EU member states ahead of the European summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, part of which will be devoted to migration.

According to her, the EU must "build a level of harmonization and trust" to facilitate the deportation of illegal migrants, so that each member state recognizes the decisions taken by the others. This will ensure that "migrants who have a return decision in one country cannot use loopholes in the system to avoid being returned elsewhere."

Roughly 20% of expulsion orders issued to illegal migrants are being carried out, von der Leyen reported, and he promised better cooperation with third countries in taking in expelled migrants, in part through a tougher stance on visa policy. "Alignment of visa policy has proven to be an important tool for managing illegal movements to the EU," she remarked.
