The mayor of the city of Balasheikh (Karakkale district) and his driver were killed today in an armed attack. This was reported by the mayor of the central Turkish district, Mehmet Makas, quoted by CNN-Turk TV.
Three more people were injured in the attack.
The mayor of Balasheikh Hilmi Shen (50 years old) was seriously injured in the shooting and died a little later from his wounds. Shen's driver was also killed in the armed attack – Mikail Celikkol. Three more people were injured in the attack, Anatolia Agency informed.
The injured were admitted to hospitals in the city of Karakkale.
According to the information of the Anatolia Agency, the alleged perpetrator of the armed attack with the initials E. Sh., who is a relative of the mayor, was detained by the police.
Motives for the crime are currently unknown.
Shen was elected mayor by the Islamist Prosperity Party in local elections on March 31, 2024. He announced that he was leaving the party in July, Suzju City's electronic publication informed.
