The "Google Maps" application (Google Maps) will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, with the change visible in the United States. The gulf will retain its previous name in the application when used in Mexico, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Outside those two countries, users will see both names. The US Department of the Interior said on Friday that it has officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and the name of Mount Denali in Alaska to Mount McKinley, the agency recalls.
The name "Gulf of Mexico" is internationally recognized, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier this month in response to US President-elect Donald Trump's decision to rename the gulf.
The US Department of the Interior announced that the Gulf of Mexico will henceforth be called the “Gulf of the Americas” under an executive order by US President Donald Trump. The Republican issued an executive order that would rename the waters between the southern coast of the US and the eastern coast of Mexico in honor of “American greatness”. The name Gulf of Mexico has been in use since the 16th century.
