Decisions related to the European Commission's proposal for rearmament of the EU will not be blocked by a veto from an individual European country, a spokesman for the commission explained today at a press conference in response to questions, BTA reported.
He noted that the decisions will be adopted by the EU Council by qualified majority, not by unanimity. It is planned that EU countries will decide for themselves whether to take advantage of the opportunity to increase defense spending, without this being considered a violation of European budgetary rules. When they decide to increase their military spending, EU countries will have to inform the EC of their intentions and it will provide an assessment. If the commission gives a positive assessment, a vote in the EU Council will follow, the spokesman explained.
According to him, for now, the EC plans to direct European funds mainly to the development of military infrastructure and the acquisition of equipment. The spokesman added that there are proposals for a broader list of projects for European funding and they will be discussed in the coming weeks. The European Council will examine the EC's proposals for rearmament in detail in a few days, the spokesman indicated.
