Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum discussed in a phone call the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump yesterday on both countries, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA, citing Sheinbaum's office.
The leaders agreed to work together in areas of mutual interest and to improve the strong bilateral relationship between Canada and Mexico.
The two countries announced retaliatory measures yesterday against the actions of the Trump administration.
The European Commission expressed regret that the United States has increased tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico and China, defining this measure as harmful to all countries. Brussels' reaction came a day after US President Donald Trump signed a decree in this direction, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
"The EU firmly believes that low tariffs promote growth and economic stability and will respond firmly if it is targeted by unfair tariffs“, the EC warns.
Trump yesterday made good on his threat to increase tariffs on the US's main trading partners, which together account for 40 percent of imports into the country. He imposed 25 percent tariffs on goods coming from Canada and Mexico and 10 percent additional tariffs on imports from China.
"Tariffs lead to unnecessary economic disruption and fuel inflation. They harm all countries“, commented the EC and stated that opening up markets and respecting international trade rules is essential for strong and sustainable economic growth“.
Trump has said on several occasions that he will also impose tariffs on European products. On this occasion, the EC has now said that at the moment there is no information about planned new tariffs.
“Our trade and investment relations with the US are the most important in the world. The challenges are significant. We must strive to strengthen these relations“, stressed the EC a few days ago, after Trump said “absolutely“ in response to the question of whether he would impose tariffs on the EU, after targeting Mexico, Canada and China with tariffs.
