Greenland is not for sale, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said today, after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week that President Donald Trump's expressed interest in acquiring the island "is not a joke", Reuters reported, BTA reported.
“Greenland is now part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is part of our territory and it is not for sale”, Frederiksen said at an informal meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.
Trump said he would make the autonomous Danish territory part of the United States, and did not rule out the possibility of using military or economic force to persuade Denmark to hand it over, Reuters notes.
Frederiksen agreed with the US view that the Arctic region is becoming increasingly important from the perspective of security and defense. “So if it comes to securing our part of the world, we can find a way forward,“ she said.
