Nearly 90% of Germans believe that foreign actors, mainly from Russia and the United States, are trying to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections via social media, according to the results of a sociological survey published by Reuters, BTA reports.

The survey, conducted by the industry association "Bitcom" last month, included more than 1,000 voters. According to the results, 45% of respondents believe that Russia plays a leading role in the manipulation attempts, followed by the United States with 42%. China is mentioned by 26% and Eastern Europe by 8%.

More than two-thirds (69%) of voters consider the internet to be an important source of information for the elections scheduled for February 23. However, conversations with friends and family remain more important for 82% of respondents. Television also continues to be of great importance, especially for those over 75 (76%).

Approximately 80% of respondents insist that the next government make digital policy a top priority. 71% of them support the creation of a new and independent ministry for digital technologies. "Bitcom" President Ralf Wintergerst stressed the importance of the new ministry, which should have the necessary powers and resources, its own budget and the ability to develop new laws and projects.
