Iranian President: Tehran does not seek to develop nuclear weapons - 1

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that his country does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.

This statement was made in connection with a comment by US President Donald Trump, who indicated that Iran should not have a nuclear arsenal.

“We do not seek nuclear weapons“, emphasized Pezeshkian during a meeting with foreign diplomats in Tehran. He added that this claim is “easily verifiable“.

Pezeshkian referred to a religious decree issued by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which prohibits the possession of nuclear weapons. He stressed that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons, as the killing of innocent people is unacceptable according to the doctrine of the Islamic Republic.

Yesterday, Donald Trump said that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, but expressed support for a peaceful solution to the issue. A day earlier, the US president reaffirmed his support for the policy of maximum pressure on Tehran.

In 2018, during Trump's first term, the US withdrew from the international agreement on Iran's nuclear program, signed three years earlier. The agreement provided for the easing of sanctions against Tehran in exchange for limiting its nuclear ambitions. After Washington's unilateral withdrawal from the deal, Iran has not fulfilled its commitments. All attempts to restore the agreement in recent years have failed.

Yesterday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the policy of maximum pressure on Tehran will fail, similar to the failures during Trump's first term.
