Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government is considering filing a lawsuit against Google over the company's decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of the Americas“ on Google Maps. This is reported by Fox News, News.bg reports.
“We'll wait. We're analyzing what this would mean from a legal perspective, but we hope they will correct the change“, Sheinbaum said.
Google took the renaming action after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the name. As a result, Google Maps users in the US now see the designation “Gulf of America“, while those outside the US and Mexico see both terms.
According to official information from the company, in Mexico the name will remain “Gulf of Mexico“, but in an international context users will be able to see both options.
The Trump administration's decision has caused further controversy after the US Department of the Interior announced that it had officially changed the name of Mount Denali in Alaska, returning it to its previous name - Mount McKinley. Google Maps is also expected to reflect this change.
The tension over the renaming of the gulf has led to a clash between the White House and the media. The Associated Press (AP) reported that its reporters were not allowed to attend the signing of the decree because the agency refused to accept the new name and continued to use the "Gulf of Mexico."
In response to the situation, Claudia Sheinbaum jokingly suggested that North America, including the United States, be renamed "Mexican America" - a historical name used on early maps of the region.
