G7 foreign ministers discuss new sanctions against Russia, security guarantees for Ukraine - 1

G7 foreign ministers agreed to continue working together to achieve a durable peace deal for Ukraine that includes credible security guarantees. They linked future sanctions against Russia to Moscow's good faith participation in the talks, Reuters reports, quoted by News.bg.

“Any new, additional sanctions should be linked to whether the Russian Federation makes genuine and good faith efforts to permanently end the war against Ukraine, which will ensure the long-term security and stability of Ukraine as a sovereign and independent state“, the statement said after the meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Among the signatories to the statement is US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The G7, made up of France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom, reaffirmed its commitment to working together to achieve lasting peace and stressed the need to develop credible security guarantees to prevent another outbreak of war.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he would like Russia to return to the G7, noting that he believed it was a mistake to be off.

“I would love to have him back. I think it was a mistake to throw them out. Look, it's not about whether we like Russia or not. It was the G-8“, Trump said at the White House as he announced the new reciprocal US tariffs. “I think Putin would love to have him back“.
