Polish border guards have discovered cocaine worth 14.4 million euros in the Gdansk Bay of the Baltic Sea, BTA reports.
The drug, weighing about 100 kilograms, was hidden in a cache on the seabed, packed in plastic bags. According to estimates on the “black market“, the value of the seized quantity is extremely high.
International operation supported by Europol and DEA
The operation to remove the cocaine was carried out last week by divers of the Polish border services, with the participation of Europol and the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). As a result of the operation, six men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of involvement in a criminal drug trafficking network.
Disclosure through surveillance of underwater infrastructure
The revelations about the drug trafficking network were made possible thanks to the surveillance of underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. Border services noticed suspicious actions of ships that deliberately turned off their location system in certain parts of the water area, which led to the discovery of illegal activity.
Intensified control in the Baltic Sea
Poland, together with other Baltic states, has strengthened control in the region after a series of sabotage actions against underwater cables. These measures are part of efforts to prevent illegal activities and trafficking in this strategically important sea area.
