The Red Sea crisis has not led to the creation of a sustainable alternative route to replace the Suez Canal. This was stated by the chairman of the canal administration, Osama Rabi, quoted by "Reuters", reports News.bg.

He stressed that there were positive indicators of a return to stability in the region.

Yemeni Iran-backed Houthi rebels have carried out over 100 attacks on vessels since November 2023, sinking two ships, capturing another and killing at least four sailors.

As a result, several major global shipping companies have suspended Red Sea voyages and rerouted their ships around South Africa to avoid potential attacks.

In December, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi revealed that the disruption had cost Egypt about $7 billion in lost revenue from the Suez Canal in 2024.

Although the Houthis have stated their intention to limit their attacks on ships, in January Maersk announced that it would continue to avoid the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea route, rerouting its ships towards the southern tip of Africa.
